Personalised hand lettered mug with POSCA paint pens

POSCA paint pens are one of my favourite tools for lettering on any surface that isn’t paper. They are such versitile pens, and some of the most opaque paint pens I’ve ever used.

I also love that they can be easily wiped off certain surfaces like glass or ceramics, great for mistakes or temporary projects. Did you know you can make them permanent though? In this tutorial I will be showing you exactly how you can do this, and create your very own personalised hand lettered mug.

Step 1

Clean the mug using rubbing alcohol and a cloth. This ensures there is not dust or grease on the mug before you start decorating it. Now it’s ready to transfer your design on to the mug, I’ve shared a couple of ways you can do this below in Steps 2a and 2b. However if you feel confident, and want to go straight into using POSCA pens to create your design then jump to Step 3.

Step 2a

Sketch your design directly on to the mug using either a Blackwing pencil if the mug is white or a pale colour. If your mug is a dark colour, then I recommend using a Stabilo Aqurellable. You can easily wipe off your marks, so you can ensure that you are happy with the design before.

Step 2b

If you have an existing design or you find it easier to design on a flat surface, then this method is for you. Firstly create your using either use Procreate or pen and paper. If you have created your design digitally, print this out at the correct size. Attach some carbon tracing paper to the mug so the shiny side is against the mug surface. Then fix the design on top of the carbon tracing paper, this is going to be your template. Use a pencil to trace over your design, the carbon tracing paper will transfer your design on to the mug. Magic!

Step 3

Carefully trace over your design using a POSCA pen. Just like in callgraphy, lift your pen off after each stroke. This means you can easily twist the mug around, and reduce the risk of any mistakes.

Step 4

Decorate the rest of the mug with different colour POSCA pens. I loved adding dots in my brand colours to make it feel really personalised.

Step 5

Let the paint pen dry, prefferably overnight. You can then wipe off any pencil/carbon markings with a dry cloth.

Step 6

Place in to a cold oven, and set the temperate to 160C. Leave the mug in there for 45mins. After this turn the oven off and leave he mug to cool to room temperature.

Tips

If you make a mistake with the POSCA pens you can easily wipe it off wit ha cloth or q-tip (this can only be done before you bake the mug in the oven). If the paint has dried a little, then you can use some rubbing alcohol off to remove it more easily.
